Grinding And Clenching Teeth Becoming More Common

Dentists have reported seeing more patients with chipped and cracked teeth in recent months as a result of them grinding and clenching their teeth.

The Independent shared the findings of a survey by the American Dental Association (ADA), which found that 70 per cent of dentists questioned reported seeing an increase in these behaviours, with the stress of the continuing Covid-19 pandemic thought to be one of the main contributing factors.

Marko Vujicic, PhD, chief economist and vice president of the ADA Health Policy Institute, commented: “The increase over time suggests stress-related conditions have become substantially more prevalent since the onset of Covid-19.”

One of the potential issues is that many people will be unaware that they are grinding their teeth in their sleep, with the damage going unnoticed until a dental exam. This is why it’s important to make sure you have regular check ups with your dentist, the newspaper added.

Last month Hamodia reported that a study conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that excessive smartphone use can cause a range of issues, from problems sleeping to teeth grinding and pain in the mouth and jaw muscles.

According to the researchers, the reason for this is due to the stress and anxiety that can be caused by feeling as though we should be constantly available for contact through our smartphones.

The study also found that teeth grinding and tightness in the jaw occurred both during the day and at night among those who were suffering from greater stress due to their phone usage.
